What a GST tax invoice must show

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what every tax invoice needs. The generator lays these out for you, and warns you when something important is missing.

    • Your name, address and GSTIN, and the customer’s name, address and GSTIN if they are registered.
    • A consecutive invoice number of up to 16 characters — letters, numbers, hyphens and slashes — unique for the financial year, and the date of issue.
    • For each item: a description, HSN code for goods or SAC code for services, quantity and unit, and the taxable value after any discount.
    • The GST rate and the amount of CGST and SGST (or UTGST), or IGST, for each item, and the total invoice value in figures and words.
    • The place of supply with the state name for inter-state supplies, whether tax is payable on reverse charge, and your signature or digital signature.

    CGST and SGST, or IGST?

Compare your state with the place of supply. When both are in the same state, the tax is split equally between CGST and SGST — 18% becomes 9% + 9%. When they are in different states, or you are exporting, the whole amount is charged as IGST. Businesses with an aggregate turnover above ₹5 crore must also report B2B invoices on the Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN.

    FAQ

Questions about the gst invoice generator

What must a GST tax invoice include?
The supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a unique invoice number of up to 16 characters and the date; the recipient’s name, address and GSTIN if registered; HSN or SAC codes, descriptions, quantities and values; the taxable value, tax rates and amounts of CGST, SGST or IGST; the place of supply with state name for inter-state supplies; whether tax is payable on reverse charge; and a signature.
When do I charge CGST and SGST instead of IGST?
If the supplier’s location and the place of supply are in the same state, charge CGST and SGST, split equally. If they are in different states, charge IGST at the full rate. The generator picks the right one from the states you choose.
Which GST rate should I use?
After the GST rate changes that took effect in September 2025, most goods and services fall under the 5% or 18% slabs, with 40% for a few specified goods and special rates such as 3% for gold. Always confirm the rate for your HSN or SAC code.
Is my invoice data sent to your servers?
No. The invoice is created entirely in your browser. A draft is kept on this device so you don’t lose your work, and you can clear it at any time.
Can I use this for e-invoicing?
Businesses whose aggregate turnover crosses the e-invoicing threshold (₹5 crore) must generate B2B invoices through the Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN. This tool creates regular tax invoices for businesses below that threshold.
